3rd December 2006

The Sunday Open was on Willow Pool and Mill Pool this week. Mill Pool produced by far the top weights but Willow provided more of the middle weights. The waggler was the most productive as the very strong wind made it difficult to use the pole. Silver fish were caught up in the water on maggot and the carp fell to corn and pellet with most being caught on the bottom in the margins.

Rich Evans took the silver prize with 15 lb 4 oz from peg 83 on Mill Pool.

Neil Thursfield won the match from peg 78 on Mill Pool, he landed 101 lb 6 oz of carp which he caught on the bottom on the far bank with corn. Neville Groves landed 91 lb 6 oz from peg 88, he used corn too and caught most of his fish in the edge.

The league leaders are still Kev Williams and Rich Evans with 107 and 106 points respectively but the competition is still quite tight for the other places in the final.

The Sunday Open was on Furnace Pool again this week. Due to the nights drawing in the match was only 3 ¾ hours long. Kev Johnson improved on last week’s third place performance with 93 lb 6 oz from peg 30 to take first place. Kev Williams returned from his holiday to take second place with 65 lb from peg 22. Quite a few of the lads complained that they were either missing bites or not able to land the fish although there were plenty of fish there.

Other anglers have reported that pellet & paste, meat, corn and hemp are still producing with maggot catching plenty of fish too, just remember fish dead depth with feed going in little and often.

The Sunday Open was on Furnace Pool for a change this week. Due to the nights drawing in the match was just about 4 hours again and Paul Cook, from Stourport, still managed (for the second week on the trot) to catch plenty to come first from peg 15 with 132 lb 5 oz. On Willow Pool on Sunday Lois Brown (aged 9yrs) fished with maggots and light tackle up in the water after roach and rudd which she caught plenty of and then came into the margin (almost under her feet) and started to catch mirrors, commons and crucians of various sizes. Her best was a common that weighed in at 10 lb exactly which set her new PB.

Other anglers have reported that pellet & paste are still their choice baits with meat and corn and hemp still producing.

The Sunday Open was on Mucky Meadow Pool again this week. Ed has not used peg 31 in the opens lately and a few were surprised at it’s inclusion this week. It proved to be a good draw for Ray Lamb though as he landed 94 lb and won the match. He used worm and fished in close. In second place was Paul Cook with 85 lb 4 oz he used maggots and also fished in close. Dave Williams came third for the second week on the trot with 60 lb 10 oz off peg 38. Fourth place went to Kev Johnson on peg 33 with 50 lb 11 oz.

Don’t forget the Furnace Mill Sunday Winter League starts on 22 nd October when the open times change to draw at 10 am fish 11 am to 4 pm.

Pleasure anglers have still been reporting excellent catches this week with some breaking personal bests on individual fish. Tom Clark from Stourport used catfood to catch well over 100 lb on Mill Pool. Sam Fletcher from Leeds was especially pleased with his visit this week when along with some nice silver fish he landed 10 carp between 5 and 9 lb and finished off the day with one at 12 lb and another at 15 lb 10 oz. He started by feeding 4mm Furnace Feed Pellet with red expanders on the hook then switched to feeding the expanders with out being pumped (so that they floated) and used the floating hook pellets to catch his bigger fish.

Pleasure anglers have reported excellent catches this week with all the pools producing. Loads of carp between 2 and 6 lb being caught on a regular basis and for those that prefer to target the larger fish plenty of 8 to 15 lb being caught along with some nice perch, tench and bream.

20th August 2006

The Sunday Open was on Mucky Meadow Pool this week as a few of our regulars were involved in club matches on Willow and Mill Pool. Kev Johnson from Stourport took the honours this week with 108 lb 6 oz off peg 48. He used pellet and corn and fished in the margins to catch his carp. Chris Senter came second off peg 34, he used paste to attract his 101 lb catch which he caught 6 metres out. In third place was another Stourport angler, Warren Jennings, he landed 96 lb off peg 38 using pellet.

Colin Matthews from Bewdley drew peg 54 this time round and he landed some excellent roach and rudd but it was the six Golden Orfe that boosted his weight to 20 lb 1 oz to win the silver prize. That makes it four in a row for peg 54 to win the silver prize.

Tactics seemed a bit more varied this week with some anglers catching in close and others 6 metres out but all on the bottom. Pellet, paste and corn were the most successful baits. Top tip is not too much bait going in at any one time, little and often keeps the fish competing.

Rob Cooksey couldn’t make it two in a row this week as he was beaten by regular competitor Kev Williams in the Sunday Open. Rob landed 132 lb 7 oz off peg 66 on Willow Pool but was beaten by Kev on the opposite bank with 191 lb 13 oz off peg 59. This is the best match weight produced by Willow Pool although it is still 25 lb short of the fishery record.

In third place on peg 55 was Andy Morrison with 112 lb and fourth place went to Stourport angler, Paul Cook with 104 ob 7 oz off peg 68.

Willow has proved itself, yet again, to be a great pool to fish as it produced the top four weights of the match, all of which were over 100 lb.

The silver prize went to R.Babb, who landed 17 lb 6 oz on peg 54 on Mucky Meadow, he had a great selection of golden orfe, roach and bream.

Lots of anglers reported fishing on the bottom was the best tactic this week with worm producing well along with the red 4mm Furnace Feed pellet and paste. The 6mm green expander pellets have been very successful on the hook.

Rob Cooksey hasn’t fished the Sunday Open at for a while but he was glad he took part this week when he took first place. Rob drew peg 12 which is on the narrow section of Furnace Pool and landed 128 lb 11 oz. Second place went to Stourport angler Paul Cook, he drew peg 37 on Mucky Meadow and netted 87 lb 15 oz, nearly 13 lb of that was silver fish which secured him the silver prize too.

A very close third place was claimed by another local lad, Dan Bache, he landed 87 lb 6 oz off peg 46. Steve Harris came in 4 th place with 85 lb 11 oz off the ever popular peg 4 on Furnace.

Yet again pellet and paste and worm and caster have been the baits to use. Lots of carp are taking floating pellets and bread later on in the day.

The fish have been feeding well again at FURNACE MILL FISHERY. Pleasure anglers have reported excellent catches and over 100lb was needed to get in the top 4 in the Sunday Open.

First place went to Ray Lamb who drew the much fancied peg 8. He landed 122 lb 2 oz, fishing shallow using worm and pellet. In second place was open regular Paul Cook from Stourport. He landed 118 lb 4 oz off peg 25 using pellet and paste. Dean Walters was on peg 30 and he used pellet and worm to land 101 lb 11 oz. Fourth place went to Steve Harris with 100 lb 5 oz off peg 52.

Rich Evans was disappointed to only come 8 th with his catch of 86 lb 13 oz but he did take the silver prize for the second week on the trot with 21 lb 4 oz of roach, rudd and bream. He caught these shallow on the worm.

Pellet and paste were effective baits this week but worm and caster caught lots of fish too. Fish were feeding up in the water with some large carp being caught in the margins.

The temperature was much more comfortable this week and the fish seemed to approve of the change in air pressure too as they were much more willing to feed in the Sunday Open.

First place went to local lad Dan Bache; many of you will know him from Mal Storey’s tackle shop. He landed 120 lb 13 oz of carp from peg 34. His mate, Max Galakowski, came in second with 113 lb 5 oz from peg 38. Third place went to Richard Evans from the other side of the pool on peg 51. He landed 103 lb 3oz with 19 lb 3 oz of his catch being silver fish which meant he took the silver prize too. Fourth place went to Warren Jennings (another pal of Dan’s) on peg 36 with 102 lb 11 oz and fifth place went to Paul Cook from Stourport with 102 lb from peg 42.

Pellet and paste was the tactic this week. Either the halibut or catfood paste with 2.5 mm feed pellet crumbled in. Lots of fish are feeding up in the water but the larger weights are being caught at dead depth with regular feeding to get the fish competing. The margins produced a lot of fish later in the afternoon.

Even the England game didn’t stop anglers competing this Sunday. A storm threatened but it didn’t actually start to rain until about 9pm when everyone was packing up.

Kev Williams, MCM Meat cutters, took the honours yet again. Kev is really in form at the moment and has been placed every week for the last few weeks. He drew the very popular peg 38 so he knew he was in with a chance yet again and fishing meat on the deck at approx 4 metres he landed 91 lb 1 oz. The catch was mainly carp.

New comer Matt Hodges came in second with 68 lb 12 oz off peg 53, he used paste in the margins. Steve Mayer came in third with 47 lb 9 oz from peg 46, he used pellet fishing on the bottom at approx 8 metres.

Brian Wood won the silver prize with 9 lb of beautifully coloured golden orfe from peg 54. He fished in close to the boat and used meat on the hook whilst feeding pellet.

Same as last week with the tactics, lots of fish are feeding up in the water but the larger weights are being caught at dead depth with regular feeding to get the fish competing. Margins are well worth a go later on in the afternoon or evening.

The weather was a little cooler this Sunday and rain threatened but did not fall.

31 fished and Ed decided to use Mucky Meadow and Willow Pools this week as Willow normally produces good weights at this time of year and is very popular with the open lads. Roy Evans took the honours with 71 lb 8 oz from peg 47. He was especially pleased when he also took the silver prize – even if he did have to share it as he and Andy Buckley both landed 4 lb exactly!

Dave Williams is in top form at the moment and has been in the top three for the last few weeks. He came second off peg 56 on Willow Pool with a catch of 62 lb 9 oz. Third place went to regular Open match angler Brian Wood, he took 56 lb 2 oz off peg 38 and Keith Johnson showed improved form to take 4 th with 53 lb 11oz from peg 45.

Lots of fish are feeding up in the water but the larger weights are being caught at 6 to 8 metres dead depth with regular feeding to get the fish competing. Margins are well worth a go later on in the afternoon or evening.

Mucky Meadow’s hot pegs at the moment are 36, 38, 46, 47 and 48. Willow ’s are 55, 56, 65 and 74. Furnace’s are 4, 5, 8, 13, 21 and 22. Mill’s are 78, 86 and 87.

11th June 2006

Another sunny day and plenty of fish were caught by match and pleasure anglers alike.

Kev Williams had been wanting to draw peg 8 for a few weeks thinking that it should produce a good weight and was proved right when he took the honours in the open with 113 lb 14 oz. He fished about 6 metres out on the deck. Dave Williams came in second for the second week on the trot with 108 lb 6oz from peg 36 on Mucky Meadow. Third place went to Mark Workman who landed 103 lb 8 oz off peg 48 and he was followed by Chris Senter with 92 lb 13 oz off peg 21 on Furnace Pool.

The silver fish have still been feeding on the carp spawn this week so have not been so easy to catch. Paul Cook took the silver prize this week with 7 lb 14 oz from peg 54.

4th June 2006

It was a beautiful summer’s day this Sunday – at long last! Bright sunshine all day long and carp spawning in the margins made it a testing day for some.

On the open however Paul Cook’s match record looked to be under threat with Chris Newton on peg 38 on Mucky Meadow catching non-stop. In the end he weighed in a massive 201 lb 4 oz so the record is still safe. Dave Williams proved that 32 is a peg worth drawing when he landed 143 lb 4 oz to come in second. Chris Bradney took third from the other side of the pool on peg 48 with 79 lb 11 oz. Fourth place went to Nev Groves on peg 94 on Mill Pool with 68 lb 9 oz and fifth was Andy Newton on peg 87 with 61 lb 15 oz.

Once again the 4mm feed pellet has proved effective for the pleasure anglers but this week quite a few of the open lads switched back to 2.5mm. Meat, worm and red maggot seem to have been the favourite hook bait but of course with the sunny weather floating bread and floating hook pellets have worked well later in the day.

The silver fish have been feeding on the carp spawn this week so have not been so easy to catch. A few of the lads tipped back their silver fish without weighing them in thinking that they didn’t have enough – luckily for Mark Workman he decided to take the time to do it and won the silver prize with only 4lb!

29th May 2006

The Bank Holiday Open saw slightly better weather in that it was dry in the morning but although the sun was warm the wind was cold. The rain however couldn’t stay away and came down with some force at lunchtime and then after another bout of sunshine at 4.30pm the heavens opened and we had a hail storm! These weather extremes didn’t put off many anglers and the pleasure fishermen (and women) all reported good catches.

First place in the open when to Dave Parry on peg 8 on Furnace Pool. He landed 73 lb most of which he caught early on fishing tight into the opposite bank. Andy Newton came second with 56 lb 10 oz off peg 17 and he was followed by Mark Pincher with 53 lb 6 oz.

It was a much drier day this Sunday but the weather was not as warm as some hoped. Kev Williams won from peg 36 on Mucky Meadow with 70 lb 10 oz. He was followed by Tim Jones on peg 38 with 60 lb 6 oz and Kev Driver came third with 58 lb 2 oz from peg 41. Pretty similar tactics as last week with lots of fish in the margins towards the end of the match and infact a lot of anglers said that they caught the majority of their fish in the last hour to hour and a half – just goes to show you shouldn’t pack up early!

21st May 2006

Due to the horrendous weather forecast for Sunday the numbers were down in this week’s open and only 19 fished. The ones that stayed away may have been glad as the heavens opened and sent the rain crashing down the whole day with a few very blustery and incredibly heavy showers thrown in for good measure. The ones that did brave the storms were treated to a good match which was on Mucky Meadow and Furnace Pools.

Paul Savings, from Stourport, came first with 145 lb 12 oz off peg 38 on Mucky Meadow. Warren Jennings, from Kidderminster , came second on the narrow stretch of Furnace Pool with a catch of 119 lb 10 oz. Third place went to Dave Williams with 102 lb 12 oz off peg 47 and he was followed by Chris Bradney on peg 54 with 96 lb 13 oz. The following three weights were very close with 87 lb 8 oz, 87 lb and 86 lb 12 oz.

With the longer evenings many anglers have used the Furnace Feed Floating Pellet to good effect whilst others have simply used bread on the hook to catch plenty of large carp. Match anglers have been feeding 4mm feed pellet with either expanding hookers, maggot or corn on the hook. Most have used the pole at approx 8 metres coming into the margins later in the session.

14th May 2006

30 anglers took part in this Sunday’s open which was on Mucky Meadow and Furnace Pools. Anglers reported lots of lost fish and although the top weight was lower than last week the average weights were about the same.

Kidderminster man Dave Parry took first place with 75 lb 9 oz off peg 2 on Furnace Pool, he was followed by fellow M N Autos angler Paul Stafford with 67 lb 8 oz off peg 50 on Mucky Meadow Pool. Third place went to Paul Cook from Stourport with 64 lb 8 oz, Paul also won the silver prize with 13 lb 2 oz. Dave Williams, Halesowen Royal British Legion, came 4 th with 62 lb 8 oz.

4 mm pellet is still the most effective bait with paste, hook pellet or maggot on the hook. Pleasure anglers have been reporting good catches of both carp and silver fish. Quite a few golden tench have been caught this week creating great excitement amongst those anglers who have never landed one before.

7th May 2006

Although it was not very sunny this Sunday at FURNACE MILL FISHERY it was really quite warm, the fish were feeding quite well but proved a bit tricky to land. 28 fished so we used Mucky Meadow and Furnace Pool. Paul Savings took the honours from peg 36 on Mucky, he landed 134 lb 6 oz. In second place was Mark Pincher with 75 lb 13 oz off peg 32. Kev Williams took third with 65 lb 12 oz off peg 45 and he was closely followed by Chris Bradney with 62 lb 5 oz off peg 2 on Furnace Pool.

For the second week on the trot the silver prize went to Steve Mayo with 13 lb 12 oz on peg 24.

Pegs 32 and 36 were in the top two and peg 2 came 4 th for the second week on the trot.

4 mm pellet has started to make more of a mark with the open lads and quite a few of them tried the paste which proved effective on the hook. The warmer weather again this week has seen floating pellet and bread proving successful with the carp for the pleasure anglers.

30th April 2006

Having felt very summery in the afternoons it was really disappointing that the temperature dropped at the weekend. The rain started at about 7pm which made it quite difficult to weigh in and with 37 fishing it took a while!

In first place was Andy Newton, he landed 124 lb 9 oz on peg 32. Dave Parry came second off peg 36 with 83 lb 1 oz and Warren Jennings took third place with 76 lb 11 oz.

The silver prize went to Steve Mayo on peg 48, he landed 31 lb 7 oz of roach and rudd.

The open lads are still favouring the 2.5mm feed pellet but pleasure anglers have found plenty of success with the red 4mm fishing corn over the top. Worm is also producing well with red maggot catching too. During the three warmer days we had this week towards the evening floating pellet and bread have caught some excellent carp with some pleasure anglers recording personal bests.

23rd April 2006

The Furnace was on fire this weekend during the open match. With 28 fishing on Furnace and Mill Pool you had to weigh over 100lb to get into the top six on Sunday. Yet again peg 5 was the hottest peg with Dave Henderson from Birmingham recording his personal best match weight of 138 lb 9 oz.

Kev Driver drew peg 4 (for the fifth time in a row according to his son Liam) and was gutted to realise that having come second with 129 lb 12 oz he was on the bonus peg! In third place was Kev Johnson with 120 lb 8 oz off peg 15. Andy Newton came in 4 th from peg 10 with 115 lb 2 oz and Bill Ashington landed 108 lb 11 oz off peg 8. Furnace Mill regular Brian Wood having won last week wasn’t too disappointed to come in 6 th because he too beat his match PB with 101 lb 11 oz off peg 13, and he landed yet another tagged fish!

Mel Kitson, from Telford, realised he was falling behind with the carp so concentrated on silver fish and landed 31 lb 4 oz from peg 17.

Once again Furnace Feed Pellet has been the most successful bait this week, with the open match anglers still preferring the 2.5mm pellet. Maggot, meat and corn have been good on the hook with red maggot being the most productive.

17th April 2006

It was a much brighter start to the day for the Easter Bank Holiday match and the temperature during the day was much better – if you could get out of the gusting wind.

18 anglers took part in the match which was on Furnace Pool. Dave Parry from Kidderminster won with 75 lb 6 oz from the very popular peg 5. In second place was Chris Bradney on peg 26 with 72 lb 10 oz. Kev Driver, also from Kidderminster , came in third with 71 lb 14 oz off peg 4. 4 th place went to Kev Williams, from Codsall, with 66 lb 8 oz off peg 10 in the narrow stretch.

Silver fish weren’t too prolific in the match with the weights consisting of mainly good sized carp and tench.

It was a cloudy start to the day and although it was slightly milder this week with the odd hint of sunshine the wind was still cold.

With 28 anglers two pools were used, this time it was Mill and Willow Pools. Andy Newton’s winning streak came to an end as he only managed to come fifth. Furnace Mill regular Brian Wood took the honours with 71 lb 11 oz off peg 68 on Willow Pool. In close second was Luke Whittaker on peg 88 on Mill Pool with 70 lb 2 oz. 3 rd place went to Chris Senter on peg 78 with 67 lb 6 oz and he was followed by Kev Johnson with 62 lb 5 oz off peg 83.

Yet again Furnace Feed Pellet has been the most productive bait this week. The match anglers have favoured the 2.5mm pellet although pleasure anglers have found the red 4mm pellet with corn and sinking hookers have been effective. Worm is also starting to go well.

It was a frosty start to the day this Sunday and although the sun did shine in the morning it went very cold again in the afternoon.

It was the start of the evening Open season and another good turn out meant two pools were used and they were Mucky Meadow and Willow Pool. Andy Newton made it two in a row winning this week off peg 48. He landed 75 lb 13 oz. In close second place was Mark Hawthorn with 70 lb 6 oz from across the other side of Mucky Meadow on peg 37. Third place went to Furnace Mill regular Kev Williams who landed 65 lb 11 oz off peg 47. Although the winning weight wasn’t as good as last week the top seven still had over 50 lb each. Congratulations to Kevin Coulton from Morecambe who with no experience of the venue came in fifth with 57 lb 13 oz.

The howling wind didn’t put anglers off this weekend, male and female alike. Umbrellas were turned inside out and chairs blown into the lakes – luckily they were empty at the time! Waves were lapping at the banks and branches fell from the trees but still the anglers caught fish.

The Open was back on Mucky Meadow and Furnace Pool. Andy Newton won the match off peg 54 with 133 lb 9 oz. Neville Groves came in second with 100 lb 1 oz, he was fishing peg 12 which is in the narrow section on Furnace. Gary Haywood came in third off peg 5, he landed 55 lb exactly. John Savings came 4 th from the opposite corner on peg 4. He landed 53 lb 6 oz and was followed very closely with 53 lb 2 oz which was caught by Furnace Mill regular John Newton off peg 36 on Mucky. The next five weights were in the high 40’s followed by another five in the 30’s proving that the fish were feeding all around the two lakes.

No snow this week at Furnace Mill Fishery but the wind was very cold keeping temperatures low. Plenty of people turned up to fish and were rewarded with quality fish.

The open was spread across two pools again this week and was won by Dave Hobbis who landed 112 lb 7 oz off peg 37 on Mucky Meadow. Neil Thursfield drew peg 30 on Furnace Pool for the second week on the trot and came second with 55 lb 4 oz. He was closely followed by Sean Moss on peg 49 on Mucky Meadow who landed 54 lb 6 oz. Furnace Pool proved to be the most productive overall.

Silver fish prize went to Gary Haywood who landed 12 lb 4 oz off peg 17. Kev Williams landed a beautiful perch which weighed in at 3 lb 7 oz.

Various techniques proved effective this week. With waggler and pole both being used to good effect. Corn still seems to be the favourite bait although pellet and maggot were popular.

The snow was falling fast and furious at 7.30am on Sunday and Ed and Jane were thinking no-one would turn up for the match – how wrong could they be. A few had cancelled due to the forecast but some of the regulars (and a few newcomers) were undaunted. Apparently there wasn’t any snow in Bewdley! Dan Thursfield won the match off peg 21 on Furnace Pool. ishing for Old Dial AC he landed 52 lb 4 oz of quality carp and tench. In second place was regular Kev Williams from Codsall who landed 46 lb 8 oz, with only 4 lb 4 oz of silver fish included in his weight. Keeping it in the amily Neil Thursfield came in 3 rd place with 28 lb 8 oz off peg 30. In contrast to last week the sun shone brightly all day at FURNACE MILL FISHERY. However, the pools were covered in ice so Ed spent quite some time in the early morning racing up and down the Mucky Meadow and Furnace Pools trying to break it up.

The club on Mucky Meadow didn’t have a very good day as unfortunately they were fishing pegs 40 to 54 and most of the ice was blown down onto pegs 40 to 48. Although I did see quite s few anglers weigh in they didn’t have large weights.

The Open was on Furnace Pool yet again this week. Gary Haywood was on peg 4 and he won the match with 50 lb 14 oz of carp. He fished maggot on the bottom and in the margins. In second place was Danny Bache on peg 1, he fished maggot and corn to land 20 lb 10 oz, 7 lb of which was silver fish. Mick Round was placed yet again but only managed 15 lb off peg 27. He caught carp on sweetcorn and his silver fish on maggots.

22nd January 2006

The FURNACE MILL FISHERY open was on Furnace Pool this week. Unfortunately the sun didn’t really manage to burn away the morning fog so the day stayed cold but fish were still caught around the pool

Furnace Mill regular Mick Round drew peg 15 for the second week on the trot but after only taking second place last week he took first this week with a weight of 54 lb 6 oz. This weight was 5 oz down on last week but Mick said that he failed to land a few big fish. Mick fished just off the shelf on the far bank using corn. Second place went to Paul Savings on peg 22, fishing on the bottom Paul used maggots and corn to land 53 lb 2 oz of carp.

The silver fish prize went to Dave Hobbis on peg 8 with a catch of 10 lb 2 oz of quality roach.
