As I look out of the window with the sun beating down I can see plenty of fish taking surface baits. The natural expanders left as they are make a great floating bait with the floating scopex hookers on the hook. There has been some great sport this week surface fishing. If you prefer to fish on the bottom it is still the 4mm Furnace Feed pellet that is the most effective but lots of anglers have also been using the 6 mm – no particular colour is doing better than the other.

The Sunday Open was on Mucky Meadow and Willow Pools again this week with 18 anglers.

The temperature was much warmer compared to last week and the weights showed an improvement. Paul Cook, Mark’s Tackle Stourport, won the match with 116 lb 2 oz from peg 42 fishing pellet and maggot. In second was Tim Jones, Golden Maggot, with 99 lb 1 oz from peg 50 and he was closely followed by Chris Senter, Alan’s Tackle Worcester, on peg 52 with 90 lb 3 oz Fourth for the second week in a row was John Savings, Furnace Mill, with 85 lb 3 oz which was exactly 30 lb more than his catch last week. Peg 55 on Willow Pool is a hot peg at the moment as it won the match last week and produced the top weight on the pool this. 68 lb 2 oz could only make 6 th place but Martin Tayloe was happy to win his section.

We had a hard frost on Saturday morning but it was much milder on Sunday and thankfully the rain that was forecast didn’t reach us whilst the match was on.

Nigel Marchington, Golden Maggot, won the match from a peg that we don’t usually include in the opens on Furnace, he landed 51 lb 13 oz from peg 7. In second place was Mick Round, Old Dial, with 50 lb 6 oz from peg 36, he landed some very big fish.

In third place was Kev Driver, Park Inn, with 35 lb 3 oz from peg 2. Newcomer to Furnace Mill, Chris Hill, Mossella, came in fourth with 29 lb 6 from peg 42. The next 8 weights ranged from 25 lb 7 oz to 21 lb so it was quite a close match with anglers trying to calculate their position in the league table.

Look at this for an interesting piece of old news:

4th September 2005

LOCAL LAD TURNS UP THE HEAT AT FURNACE AS THE FURNACE MILL MATCH RECORD IS SMASHED YET AGAIN!

The record created on 18 th July didn’t last very long!

Local angler, Paul Cook from Stourport, landed an outstanding catch of 214 lb 13 oz.

This beat the previous record held by Chris Senter of 205 lb 8 oz.

Mucky Meadow Pool hosted the match again. Kev Williams, from Codsall, beat his weight last week by 2 lbs but could only manage 3rd place.

Paul Cook who fishes for Mark’s Tackle, Raven Street , Stourport used pellet and paste to start, but found that his old favourite the white maggot was the most effective for him. Although he was catching regularly throughout the match it was after a very heavy shower and short lived thunderstorm that the fish went crazy particularly during the last hour.
